Gouda, the Dutch cheese Holland is famous for, has a long history dating back to the 1600’s. Alkmaar Cheese Market allows visitors to step back in time and see how the cheese market of old worked. There are demonstrations of cheese carriers, weighing of the cheese and the transport. The demonstration is conducted by men dressed in costumes of the old time Dutch.  The demonstration is interesting and enjoyable. It is held outside the Dutch Cheese Museum.

The Dutch Cheese Museum dates back to 1983 in the Weigh House. In the Museum there are displays of tools used in farming and dairy jobs. There are exhibits of historical artifacts, utensils, pictures and films all to show the history behind the Gouda Cheese.
