Arc de Triomphe:
Paris, France

The Arc de Triomphe was built in 1806. It was commissioned by Napoleon to honor the victories of the Grande Armée.  The architect took inspiration from the Roman Arc of Titus. He dropped the columns from the Arc of Titus and designed the monument at much larger proportions. The Arc de Triomphe is 50 meters high, 45 meters long and 22 meters wide. In 1921 the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the Great War was created and since then a candle is lit in commemoration every evening.

We stopped at the monument on the way to the Eiffel Tower. We did not ascend though they say the views of the surrounding area as seen from the Arc are beautiful. The Arc de Triomphe is a real work of art. It is awe-inspiring from up close. The engravings on all sides are amazing.
